The first object used as Little Devil is a small
jug which Magiotti called caraffina (1648). It is placed
inverted, upside-down, and is ballasted with lead wire. He suggested
applying pressure with one’s palm. Borelli (1670) and Desaguliers (1744)
show a similar drawing.
Kircher (1654) designed a bottle with a narrow neck that allows you to
put pressure with your thumb. Other authors have used similar machines,
among them Schott (1657), Lana (1686), Sturm (1685) and Leupold (1726),
who showed some devices which are akin to the one called Florentine
Experiment, a name suggested by Schott.
Dechales (1674) closed the glass bottle with a pig’s bladder which
allowed him to put pressure.
